QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.”

Baccalaureate Mass

The graduating seniors and the eighth graders were honored at the 2021 Baccalaureate mass at Holy Family Catholic Church. Seniors walked in wearing their graduation gowns and carrying an item that was significant to their high school career. Maggie Nelson gave the introduction, followed by Kari Schulte reading the two teachings. Then, the rest of mass continued, after which the baccalaureate ceremony began. Junior class president Bliss Betzen and senior class president Ryan Heitschmidt came forward and gave their respective speeches congratulating the eighth graders and seniors, and thanking everyone who had helped them throughout high school. Principal Robert O’Connor then named each of the graduating seniors, their parents, and the teachers, all of whom came forward and stood at the front of the church. Holy Family Youth Group leader Allison Kleman then said a prayer for the senior class, who will be graduating on Saturday, May 22 at 11:00. Following the prayer and the end of mass, the seniors stayed for pictures.

Area 1 FFA Convention

Nineteen members of the Nazareth FFA traveled to WTAMU First United Bank Center in Canyon for the Area 1 FFA Convention. In the first general session, banners for the CDE competitions were handed out, and the results from the speaking contests that had taken place a day prior. Seniors Maggie Nelson, Kari Schulte, and Ryan Heitschmidt all advanced to the state contest in their respective categories. Grace Huseman was announced as a runner-up for the John Justin Scholarship, and Kari Schulte was named the winner of the Ryan Mott memorial scholarship and will interview at state! The session ended with the talent performances. Everyone was dismissed for lunch, and voting delegates Dayson Schacher, Isamar Juarez, and Landry Kleman, nominating committee member Ryan Heitschmidt, and district officer Mary Nelson were transported to the WTAMU ag building for the district caucus, which elected the candidate to serve on the upcoming Area 1 officer team. Attendees were then transported back to the second general session, which began with the officer candidates presenting their speeches and votes being cast for the candidate. While votes were counted, the star awards and chapter sweepstakes were announced. Nazareth won the single teacher sweepstakes for both speaking and leadership development events, and was the runner-up for the single teacher career development events. Afterward, the new officer positions were announced and inducted, and the residing officers, including First Vice President Kari Schulte gave their retiring addresses, officially ending a fun and exciting day for FFA members.

A Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

After writing the Paw Prints for the past two years, I am sad to announce that this will be my last newsletter. I will be graduating from Nazareth ISD this week and passing the role of editor on to freshman Chloe Birkenfeld, who I am confident will do a phenomenal job with this newsletter. I first started this internship in July of 2019, and it has truly been a life-changing experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to learn so much about his community and highlighting all of its successes. This has allowed me to build relationships with other people through interviews and listening to stories and experiences. When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit Nazareth, my perspective on this interview changed. It soon became a source of information, as well as spiritual guidance following the shut down of our church. The entire experience has been a lesson on the importance of communication and good journalism. Before I go, I would like to extend my gratitude firstly to Holy Family Catholic Church and the parish council for giving me this opportunity. I would also like to thank church secretary Barbara Schulte for guiding me throughout this process and helping me out. I would also like to recognize the sponsors of this newsletter: Peoples Bank and MO Supply. This newsletter would not be possible without your contribution. Finally, I would like to thank the community of Nazareth and everyone who contributed information, stories, and content. It has been an honor serving as editor of the Paw Prints. Thank you and god bless!

Sincerely,

Ryan Heitschmidt
