Church Celebrates with Newly-ordained Deacon Joe Hochstein

On Saturday, Dec. 3rd, the Bishop for the Panhandle Catholic Churches, ordained eight men to the First Presbyteral Order, the Deaconate. Held at the Cathedral Church of St. Mary’s in Amarillo, the ordination was attended by nearly 1,000, with more than 100 coming from Nazareth. The Nazareth community was especially celebrating as one of their own residents was being ordained as a permanent deacon. Joe Hochstein and his wife, Angela, have been preparing for this event through study and prayer for nearly five years, and at the end of the ceremony was assigned by Bishop Patrick Zurek to be the deacon at Holy Family Church, Nazareth.

Deacon Joe was the honor deacon preaching at the Liturgies on Saturday, Dec. 3rd and Sunday, Dec. 4th. A breakfast reception for the new deacon and his wife, Angie, along with their family, was held at Nazareth School Cafeteria, hosted by the Holy Family Parish Council and the Nazareth Knights of Columbus.

Deacon Joe and Angie will join the pastoral team of the church, pastored by Fr. Ken Keller, along with Deacon Bob and Theresa Birkenfeld, and deacon-emeritus Jerome Brockman. The parish of Holy Family, existing since 1902 in Nazareth, has a membership of nearly 1,000 area residents. Deceased deacons in past years have been Al Maurer and Walter Kleman. The Holy Order of Married Deacons was re-established within the Catholic Church in 1972 and today there are 44,000 Catholic deacons worldwide.
